How to Protect Your Privacy on OkCupid

Don’t want users on OkCupid to see you viewed their profile? Don’t want Google to index yours?

What options do you have as a free user? What paid options are worth the money?

We’ll be breaking it all down here, including details on OkCupid’s often-misunderstood Incognito Mode.

  1. Here’s how you do it: Log into your OkCupid profile. Click on your profile thumbnail (you can find this on the top right corner of your screen) When the drop-down menu appears, click on “Find a User”. You will see a white box with the words, “search by username”. Type the username here. Her profile will appear as a search result.
  2. Find people on tinder. There are 3 options. Find by name: If you're looking for a good friend of yours, or are curious if this person is on tinder. Based on their names, you can search for them. Even better: you can search for more names at once. So you don't need to start over. Just tap on 'enter more names', and repeat as you wish.
  3. Registering with OkCupid is very simple and takes approximately 5 minutes. To register, you must complete the login form in which you must put your location, date of birth, name, email, and password. There is also a chance of entering this site using a phone.
  4. Ba-da-boom-ba-da-bing, they’re gone. You will no longer see that person on the Search page. Passing in DoubleTake works the exact same way. When you swipe left you’re letting us know you’re not interested in this person, and don’t want to see them again, on DoubleTake and in Search. This does not mean, however, they’ll be gone forever.

Mar 28, 2018 The OkCupid Username. Though they recently did away with all usernames and opted instead for real people names, you can still find a profile by it’s old username. Say that the person you’re looking for has an Instagram of “SnowBoarder87” and a Twitter name of “SnowBoarder87”.

What Can You Do for Free?

Okcupid Search By Name

Free users of OkCupid can do the following to protect their privacy without paying anything at all.

These are either default or available online on your Settings page. On the app, tap the gear icon at the top of your profile page, then tap Privacy.

Hide Your Real Name & Email

By default. OkCupid doesn’t even collect real names.

Hide Your Profile from The Public

Using this setting means that only logged-in OkCupid users can view your profile.

Hide or Block Specific Users

Hiding is reciprocal, so it stops you from showing up in the other person’s search, doubletake, welcome and sidebar matches, and visitors list.

To additionally prevent someone from messaging you, you need to block them.

Block Your Profile From Google

How this works is not straight-forward. Basically, if you block any user, your profile won’t be indexed by Google going forward.

Browse Profiles Anonymously

Users can typically see who viewed their profile. If you don’t want to show up in profile visitors lists, you can shut this off. The downside is you won’t be able to see who visited your profile either.

Hide Your A-List or Incognito Status

OkCupid always displays profiles the same way whether they’re paying subscribers or not.

Note, however, that there is no OkCupid feature (free or paid) which lets you hide your “Online Now” or “Last Online” status.

What Privacy Options Come With An A-List Subscription?

A-List’s “Invisible Browsing” feature makes it so you can browse profiles without showing up on visitors lists BUT you can see who visited your profile at the same time.

What Is OkCupid’s Incognito Mode?

Incognito is a separate subscription from A-list, so they don’t share any features.

With an Incognito subscription, you can be 100% hidden to anyone on OkCupid who you haven’t already messaged or liked. That means you won’t show up in searches, double take, recent activity, etc. If you go to the profile directly, it says “Profile does not exist.”

However, if you have liked or messaged someone, your profile will display to them as normal.

You can turn Incognito on or off anytime. If you decide you don’t want someone you liked or messaged to see you anymore, you can hide or un-like them and disappear.

Overall, it seems like a good option if you don’t want to be seen by or interact with anyone you haven’t picked yourself.

With all the dating sites and apps out there, it seems like there are changes being made to them daily. When you think about it, it makes sense, since there's a lot of competition out there and endless dating platforms for people to choose from. The latest? OkCupid is getting rid of user names and now making you use your real name, which could be a blessing or a curse. And by 'name,' they'll just require a first name.

Personally, I think it's NBD, as many other popular dating platforms have you not only use your real name, but also vet you via your Facebook profile. In OKC's case, there's no linking-to-Facebook required, and so it's implied you can even use a pseudonym — as long as that pseudonym is at least two letters long and includes no numbers, symbols, or emojis, an OKC spokesperson told The Verge. 'For instance, if your legal name is Elizabeth but everyone calls you Liz or Ellie, we're not going to not allow this,' the spokesperson said. Phew! Simple enough.

'We understand that, for some, usernames are a great way to show off who you are,' stated OKC's blog post announcing the username news. 'But for most, they are a pain to come up with and a pain to remember (or, in cases like unicorn__jizz, difficult to forget). And we hope that you can instead use your profile to give people an insight into your interests, rather than a made-up monicker.'

I know I've certainly seen my share of creative, straightforward, silly, and disgusting usernames on various dating platforms out there, so addressing someone by their actual name — or even a pseudonym — sounds like a win. However, some users may prefer to use behind a pseudonym, so to speak. Whether they want to be more private and/or not want to be Google-able to online strangers, there are definitely reasons some OKC users may not embrace the change.

However, the OKC spokesperson told The Verge another great reason for it. 'Normally when people introduce themselves via messaging they say for example, 'hi, i'm Sean,' instead of 'hi, I'm sadclown4eva,' the spokesperson said. 'Also we are only asking people for first names only, not their last names, so this is an added level of protection.' True — especially when you think about how OKC is not asking for Facebook verification (at least not yet).

Getting Rid Of Usernames May Mean Less Vulgarity

In their blog post, OKC also posted some common words in current usernames, by the number of usernames with words like the below. If you thought you were the only one attracting a lot of users with 'horny' in their name, you weren't alone.

  • # of usernames with 'cats' or 'cat' = 888,124
  • # of usernames with 'dog' = 138,246
  • # of usernames with 'horny' = 16,411
  • # of usernames with 'sexy' = 221,229
  • # of usernames with 'lover' = 157,553

Eliminating words like these — unless your name truly is 'Cat' — can definitely be a benefit.

If you're on OKC and wondering when you'll have to change your username, the answer is SOON. A test group of OKC members have already had to change their names, and all users will have to by the end of 2017.

However, if you prefer to online date anonymously, by using sites and apps where you can have a username to communicate with fellow online daters, here are some dating sites and apps that still allow you to remain anonymous.

Not only is PlentyOfFish free, but they also state that singles have more conversations on POF than any other dating app. In addition, they say users are 2.7x more likely to have a conversation with a fellow member in the first 24 hours.

One of Zoosk's perks is their photo verification feature to make sure members look like their photos — which, hopefully, reduces the chances of catfishing. Wallethub also called it the 'best dating app of 2016,' which says something.

All in all, even though OKC is eliminating usernames and having users use their actual names, there are still dating sites and apps where you can create a username, if that's more your thing. Or, since dating is a numbers game, you can use a mix of sites and apps, some with your real name, some with your username, and see what happens. Because, eventually, you'll have to tell your date your real name anyway.
